Sexual harassment as a form of discrimination is a violation of gender equality. Although the Republic of Moldova has made some progress in reducing gender inequality in the last decade, discrimination and harassment on the grounds of sex is common. The share of people who say that not all citizens of the Republic of Moldova are equal before the law is 61%, most often respondents indicated a situation related to discrimination based on socioeconomic status (13%), sex (12%), ethnicity or nationality (10%). The General Report on the Situation in the Field of Preventing and Combating Discrimination in the Republic of Moldova highlights an increasing trend in the number of complaints alleging discrimination on the grounds of sex. The rate of decisions to identify discrimination in the field of dignity injury (harassment) is about 19%. The criterion of sex remains dominant in discriminatory actions in this area. One of the main pitfalls that women face in the process of accessing the protection mechanism is the perpetuation of prejudices regarding the nature or role of women in society and the gaps in the regulatory framework. |
