At the same time as the anti-Soviet war began (June 22, 1941), the Organization of the Ukrainian Nationalists extended its activity in all territories inhabited by Ukrainians. It began the diplomatic and political or armed fight against the states that held regions claimed to be Ukrainian.The claimed Romanian territories were Bukovina, Bessarabia and Transdniester territory. At the 1941 year census, in Bessarabia were 261.246 (on the second place) Ukrainians from 2.364.937 inhabitants. The Romanians were1.620.847. So, one of the Romanian Intelligence Service’s mission in Bessarabia was to identify quickly the persons that worked in the interest of Ukrainian irredentism.
