This item, written based on the secret correspondence between the Bessarabian governor Alexei Haruzin and high dignitaries of the Russian Empire, especially with the Minister of Interior and the Head of the Council of Ministers Petru Stolâpin, Head of the Police Department Maximilian Trusevici, Head of the Main Press Division Alexei Belgard, representative of the Chancery of the Minister of Interior Iosif Knoll etc., throws clear light onto the backstage of the publication of the pro-Government Romanian language newspaper Moldovanul between 1907 and 1908 in Chişinău. The documents collected in the State History Archives of Russia in Sankt-Petersburg denotes that the project was developed and implemented by the Bessarabian governor Alexei Haruzin who enjoyed the financial support of the minister of interior of the Russian Empire. The publication Moldovanul was the countermeasure of the tsarist administration in the publishing in Chişinău, on 24 May 1906, of the ‘revolutionary’ and ‘irredentist’ newspaper Basarabia – a joint project of the Romanian intellectuals from Bessarabia and Romania. The declared goal of the new publication Moldovanul was to fight against ‘revolutionary’ ideas and the Romanian identity propagated on the pages of Basarabia and to cultivate in the Bessarabian peasants a loyal attitude towards the tsar and the Russian Empire.
