This article concerns the polyphonical novel as it was understood and explained by Mikhail Bakhtin in his work, Problems of Dostoyevsky’s Poetics. He stated that each character in Dostoevsky’s work represents a voice that speaks for an individual self, distinct from others. This idea of polyphony is related to the concepts of unfi nalizability and self-and-others, since it is the unfi nalizability of individuals that
creates true polyphony. His concept of novelistic polyphony is based on the musical
polyphony. Bakhtin also emphasized that, unlike other novelists, Dostoevsky does not appear to aim for a ‘single vision’, going beyond simply describing situations from various angles. This outstanding writer engendered fully dramatic novels of ideas, one of the most famous being The Brothers Karamazov. At the same time, the author of the article mentions some of the approaches to the novelistic polyphony that can be found in the works of such contemporary literary theorists as the scholars Terry Eagleton, Nicolae Manolescu as well as in The Art of the Novel published by a remarkable writer, Milan Kundera. |
