The article provides a definition of the concept of "social protection" and, taking into account the experience of the EU countries, outlines the most important characteristics of the system of social protection of the population. The main principles of functioning of the system of social protection in the Republic of Moldova are determined: the principle of social insurance; the principle of social security, the principle of social assistance. Differences in the functioning of social insurance and social assistance systems are indicated.
