Rezumat | |||||
The word Crăciun (Christmas) probably originated from an old Indo-European root that found its way into Romanian stimulated by the Latin creatio (accusative: creationem). However, a Greek route cannot be excluded, its meaning being the “Birth of Jesus”. The significance of the substantive moş is nevertheless more important. In contemporary Romanian moş stands for an elderly (male) person, but in the archaic times of the language it meant “child”, “newborn”, “scion” (vlăstar), “twig” (mlădiţă). Consequently, moş is the heir who has come to deliver us, id est Baby Jesus. Therefore, unlike Santa Claus, Father Christmas, KrisKringle, Papa Noël, Pai Natal etc., the Romanian name Moş Crăciun stood at the beginning for the “Birth of Baby Jesus”. |
