In conditions of arms race, Moscow was taking various measures to create the impression of being the second world superpower. To this purpose, in 1962, using the misunderstandings between Havana and Washington, the Soviet leadership headed by N. Khrushchev sent P-12 and P-14 missiles with medium range on the Cuban Island, with an intention to blackmail the USA. Moscow could not achieve its goal, because it managed to carry and place only P-12 missiles, which threatened less than a third of the USA. Observing them installed on the launch slopes, the USA introduced a total blockade of the Cuban Island, P-14 missiles remaining unavailable. The failure of the operation was predictable without them. Thus the planet avoided an eventual nuclear catastrophe. |
