The right to free movement in the Schengen area is a right, not just for almost half a billion European citizens, but also for third-country nationals legally resident in the Schengen area. A Europe without internal borders also brings important economic benefits, which shows that the Schengen area is a palpable, appreciated and successful reality demonstrating its importance for everyday life. Removing internal border controls has consequences for other policy areas, such as addressing cross-border crime, cross-border travel, cross-border trade and cross-border justice. Consequently, the rules on the Schengen area therefore do not only concern the free movement of persons, but also visas, asylum and police, customs and judicial cooperation. In this article, the authors elucidate the specifics of police and judicial cooperation within the Shengen Area, as well as the modalities of Moldova's co-operation with the member states of the Shengen Area. |
