In the following study „Saint Nicholas princely church in Chișinău”, the authors try to prove that it was built by the Moldavian prince Vasile Lupu (1634-1653), who gifted the church with all that was necessary. His example was followed with generosity by other princes, but in the summer of 1711 after the Prut campaign of Peter I, the church was destroyed by the Turks and Tatars. After the Russo-Turkish war of 1736-1739, in Chișinău was constructed a new church, in another place, by Lupu Năstase. Besides its spiritual mission, St. Nicholas church played an important role in the foundation of Chișinău city in the 1650s. |
