Rezumat

Many psychologists, educators and laypersons consider “Persons with borderline intellectual functioning” to be a pejorative, politically incorrect and inflammatory label that has been widely eliminated from the vocabulary of psychology. Yet, nearly every clinician is aware of the difficulties faced by persons with intelligence that is too high to be consistent with mild mental retardation, but too low to effectively function in society. These persons fall through the cracks of our educational, mental health and social systems. By eliminating the label, psychology has effectively ignored critical challenges faced by a large segment of the population. In order to address these challenges, the population of persons with borderline intellectual functioning can no longer be ignored.
