Background. Postmastectomy lymphedema is a debilitating and progressive complication, with few treatment options, which considerably lowers breast cancer survivors’ quality of life. Its incidence varies from 0-3% after lumpectomy to 65-70% after radical mastectomy and radiotherapy. Objective of the study. The purpose of this study is to determine the effectiveness of lymphaticovenous anastomosis in the prevention and treatment of postmastectomy lymphedema in various stages of the disease. Material and Methods. For this literature review more than 50 scientific articles have been studied in great detail. Results. Lymphaticovenous anastomosis has proven to be efficient in the surgical management of postmastectomy lymphedema in the first and second stage together with conservative treatment or liposuction and in the third and four stage in conjunction with lymph node transfer or Charles procedure. The supermicrosurgical technique is more efficient in the incipient or moderate stages of the disease than in severe lymphedema. Conclusion. Lymphaticovenous anastomosis is a supermicrosurgical technique useful in both the prevention of postmastectomy lymphedema development and the prevention of lymphedema progression as well as its management in all stages of the disease. |
