Background. Aging of the population and the increasing rate of the elderly people is a global phenomenon. With age, the number of diseases in a person is increasing, as well as the need for primary health care. In different contexts this increased demand is not fully met what can lead to complications. Objective of the study. Studying publications about access to health care services and reported barriers, as well as data from the literature about the concept of the patient with comorbidities and the importance of free access. Material and Methods. This study is an original descriptive research. Data collection was performed by selecting existing topic publications in PubMed and other bibliographic sources available in the period 2000-2020 in English, Russian and Romanian. The following keywords were used: co-morbidity, access, primary care services, and barriers. Results. From about 5000 publications found, only 37 articles were selected. The issue of access to medical services, especially primary care, is a special interest for researchers. With the increase in the average age of the general population in the world, researchers have defined a new nosological entity - co-morbidity. Last years, there was been interest in studying the problems related to the access of patients with co-morbidities to medical services. Deep and comprehensive understanding of various aspects of theory and practice suggests that co-morbidity affects the prognosis for the life and increases the likelihood of death. Conclusion. Access to primary care services is an essential need for patients with co-morbidities. The importance of free access is conditioned by the need to control the effectiveness of therapy, continuous monitoring of health and maintaining patient compliance. |
