In the F2 generations from hybrid of the LHI inducers with the MK01(R+) non-inducer line, genetic variation of haploid induction rate (HIR) was studied. In the F2 HIR varied from 0.4 to 18.8%, on average 5.0%, whereas LHI-3 and LHI-7 had HIR 14-18%. The pollen fertility, measured by the kernel set at the pollinated ear, correlated negatively with HIR (r = -0.84, P <0.001), which suggests the common genetic factors that determine both the HIR and reduced fertility. The ratio between range and variance of HIR suggests a small number of genes (up to 7) that determine genetic variation of HIR. |
