Background. Worldwide, the number of people living with dementia is huge and continues to rise. In Republic of Moldova, the management of cognitive disorders is a developing field. Objective of the study. To analyze physicians' attitudes regarding patients with major cognitive impairment. Material and Methods. It were done an online study, based on a standardized and validated questionnaire that included 24 questions about physicians’ knowledge, attitudes and practices about management of patients with cognitive impairment. Diagnostic, treatment, and health care barriers of these patients were assessed. The results of physician’s attitudes are presented. Results. In the study were included 122 doctors, of which 45.9% were neurologists, 25.4% psychiatrists, 13.1% family doctors, 9% psychologists, 5.6% other specialties, 91.4% physicians from urban and 8.2% from rural areas, 82.8% were females and 17.2% - males. 94.3% participants mentioned that the patient with dementia must have the access to medical services according to their individual needs, 93.4% consider that patient has the right to live with dignity, with no suffering, 86.9% that should be involved in social and cultural activities, 68% - should benefit from palliative care, 38.5% consider that this type of patients consume a lot of time, emotions and resources. Conclusion. Physicians' attitudes towards patients with dementia were mostly positive (they have the right to live with dignity, to be engaged in social activities, to benefit for individualized services) and also negative (consumes time, emotions, requires expensive investigations and treatments). |
