Background. Migraine is one of the most common neurological diseases that causes a significant decrease in quality of life. The literature suggests that the association of anxiety and panic disorder (PD), with dysfunctional breathing (DB), are possible factors which can lead to chronic migraine pain. Objective of the study. To determine the influence of anxiety as a precipitating factor of DB and the potential role of hyperventilation in triggering migraine attacks. Material and Methods. Analysis of literature, which includes 45 articles on similar cases to the proposed topic. Results. PD is more strongly associated with migraine than most other anxiety disorders. A meta-analysis of epidemiological data of a high quality study indicates that PD is 3.6 times more common in people with migraine than those without migraine. Likewise, PD was specifically linked to the DB. Cognitive behavioral theories of panic have postulated that there is positive feedback between anxiety and DB. The hypochondriacally interpretation of bodily sensations from previous panic attacks leads to even more anxiety and hyperventilation - "the model of vicious circle of panic." Conclusion. PD is the most common anxiety disorder, leading to the development of DB. Analyzing the pathophysiological mechanisms involved, as well as the cognitive behavioral theories of panic, we can ascertain that the association of anxiety with DB would condition the chronicity of migraine pain |
