Analyzing cicero’s statements exposed in his works on philosophy and rhetoric, the author of the given article deduces that the politician and the Roman orator assigns to the literature: 1. An instructive and formative dimension; 2. A civic dimension, which is being as a reflection of a peoples’ mentality, its identity act in the spiritual competition with other nations; 3. An aesthetic dimension, the literature contributing to the establishment aesthetic concepts in contemporary spirituality. this dimension can be correlated with the ethics. 4. A moral dimension, the literature being a very important domain in which the rhetorical concept copiose ornateque dicere (to express oneself with rich ideas and a special style) finds its implementation. According to cicero conception, the literature has the role to impose the urban linguistic style, to contribute to the development of Latin language through permanent delimitation of the literary style from the rustic, neglected, colloquial one.
