In 1944, the Soviet authorities subjected the population of Balti County, including Ungheni District, to excessive taxation. Although in 1946, due to the drought, the harvest in Moldova was reduced, the Soviet authorities with the support of some degraded local elements cleaned the peasants’ attics, causing a terrible famine. In 1947 the number of rural populations in the republic decreased by 10%, including children born in 1945 - by 52.1%. These huge demographic losses in Moldova were caused by the excessive demands of the Kremlin, tempted to establish domination over neighboring countries, sacrificing the health of ordinary citizens of the Soviet empire.
