The article deals with the role and the value of literature in present time. In this concern,
the author discusses three criteria of establishing the value of a literary text: sensibility,
nationality, ideology. The article shows that the first two criteria have weakened, as the
criterion of sensibility is better accomplished by other cultural productions but literature, the
national criterion has come to an end as literature no longer carries the cultural identity and
justifies political rights for a certain community. Contemporary literature, as an ambiguous
language and addressing to individuals, is best justified by the „ideology of sensibility” and
different throughout history (as it is nowadays the sensibility of the individual self). Thus,
literary theory, understood as ideology of sensibility, and literature support each other and they
cannot survive or disappear but together.
