We can distinguish taboo euphemisms from regular euphemism, depending on the reason for using euphemisms. Taboo euphemisms are based on superstition or religious prohibition. Most euphemisms of this type have appeared out of fear. In such a way, the speaker believed that he drove away negative phenomena only by substituting the word "devil" by diavol, demon, satană, necuratul, Aghiuţă, Anticristul, ucigă-l crucea, ucigă-l toaca, păcatul, ucigă-l tămîia, cel cu coadă, cel cu coarne; "cancer" by o boală incurabilă, ducă-se-pe-pustii, boala păcatelor; "epilepsy" by boala neagră. Regular euphemisms are based on reasons to avoid rude and offensive word combinations or mitigate direct expressions, which can cause harmful or hurtful labels for the receivers: gander for „prost, nerod”; prudent for „fricos”; laberman for „onanist”; senior for „bătrîn”. |
