Rezumat

This article represents the study on landfill gas formation at solid waste disposal sites in the Republic of Moldova. This study was performed in order to improve the IPCC methodology for Greenhouse gas inventory from landfills. Technical assistance for the measurements were provide by regional project “Capacity building for improving the quality of greenhouse gas inventories (Europe / NIS region) (rer/01/g31)”. I have carried out this study in close cooperation with Central Ecological Laboratory of the State Ecological Inspectorate and “Aqua Project” Institute, which conducted the drilling wells at landfills. The aim of the study is a landfill gas composition which is produced at managed and unmanaged solid waste disposal sites. The methane content test provided data on actual landfill gas quality. The preliminary results show that methane gas formation depends of the waste layer thickness. Studies show that methane gas is produsing whith a concentration exceeding 20% at waste laeyer thickness of 5 and more meters at relativelly small landfill in Straseni (20thousant inhabitants). Completely diferent results we obtain at Balti and Chisinau landfills where methane is produsing whith a concentration exceeding 60-70% . The IPCC methodology use the default value of 0,5 for methane fraction in ladfill gas. The IPCC Good Practice Guidanceand Uncertainty Management in National Greenhouse Gas Inventoties stated that the methane fraction can vary between 0.4 and 0.6 depending on several factors including waste composition. Using of national parameters for GHG inventory will incease the methane emisssions by 15-20%. It is recommend to carry out a further study during one year, observing landfill gas production on diferent season, the measurements will performed once per month. Late, based on these results, will make relevant changes on IPCC methology for methane emissions from landfill for our regions. Also the results of pumping tests allowed verifying the theoretic estimation of gas production in the landfills and show the posibility for methane recovery from managed landfills.
