Rezumat

In confronting the challenges of the modern world, education is perceived as an indispensable asset to attain the ideals of peace and freedom, and an exceptional means of bringing about personal development and building relationships among individuals, groups and nations. Due to the rapid development of technology, the growing interconnections of individuals, communities and societies across the globe, the need to reinterpret old ways of thinking, doing and learning enhanced the need for continuous training and new skills. Since today’s societies place challenging demands on individuals, they are confronted with complexity in many parts of their lives and careers. In these contexts, the competencies that individuals need to meet their goals have become more complex, requiring more than the mastery of certain narrowly defined skills. The present article outlines the issue of lifelong learning that has emerged as one of the major challenges for the worldwide knowledge society.
