Romanian exile was a permanent challenge for the Romanian post-war secret services, because the impact of Romanian intellectuals and businessmen established outside the country was huge: the opinions and value judgments issued by prominent figures in exile resonated with both communities. Romanians from other countries (especially Western) as well as on the population of the country. Under these conditions, the discrediting and enmity of those in exile had become goals of the Securitate, especially at a time when anti-regime campaigns and actions of solidarity with those left at home were intensifying. The Securitate agents, knowing that the international public opinion is receptive to the positions of the leaders of the Romanian exile and to the way they relate to the official ideology of the R.S.R., organized on the territory of other states monitoring and influencing actions. It was not always clear whether these operations served the interests of Romania or the Ceaușescu couple, but the intrusion of the political police enslaved to the totalitarian communist regime in the microcosm of Romanian dissent always aimed at blurring the negative image created in the West about political repression in the country. In addition, the structures of the Securitate also exerted a constant pressure on that Romanian historiography that developed in the environments of exile, trying to impose certain points of view. The present study presents a succession of operative combinations made by the Securitate with the involvement of the well-known agent of influence Iosif Constantin Drăgan in trying to highlight the way in which the pseudo-historiographical initiatives of the businessman synchronized with the dictator's obsessions, imposing the national populist direction in Romanian historiography and the way in which the agent, among other purposes of the dictatorship, also served the idea of reviving the thesis of "protochronism". |
