Rezumat

The foreign travelers chose the means of transportation for crossing the Romanian space depending on the direction by which they entered the Romanian Principalities and on their financial possibilities. If the entry to the Principalities was made by crossing the Danube or another waterway located on the border, the voyageurs used the boat, skiff or ferry. If, on the contrary, the entry to the country was made on land, then this was carried out in a stagecoach, carriage or on horse in mountainous areas, due to the precarious and difficult means of communication. It was in fact much more dangerous to cross from Transylvania to the extra-Carpathian Romanian Principalities, and maybe that’s one of the reasons why few descriptions of the passes that connect these two countries were kept. The vast majority of the accounts limit themselves to the description of the route, including the pass through which the travelers crossed the Carpathian Mountains, obviously with an emphasis on the dangers encountered. But maybe the most important thing is that most travelers describe their experiences during the crossing of the Carpathian Mountains with great emotion. High-ranking personalities that reached the Romanian Principalities, if we refer to the number of voyageurs that made records, are few and enjoy the support of the reign. The crossing of the country, generally, and of the border, particularly, turned into true force scenarios. Through the solemn receptions made by the country’s voivodes, they aimed to highlight the importance of to the countries the travelers were coming from. In addition to this, the political power in the Principalities was interested in ensuring that the ambassador’s or senior official’s voyage be perfect. The voivodes of the Romanian Principalities, on their own initiative, by order of the sultan, or at the suggestion of the ambassador accredited by the High Porte, made sure that the representatives of the great powers enjoyed their support. In exceptional circumstances, even if they used modern means of travel, when floods or snowfalls started or if they crossed the Carpathian passes, the situation of the peregrines could complicate a lot. The records made by the travelers reflect their mood in those moments.
