Rezumat

The multinational companies became the drive of globalization, being regarded as neutral agents within the process of economic growth and development. Whether their contribution to the process of development is positive or negative depends very much on the climate of the economic policy within which they operate. The multinational companies bring foreign investments, generate technological transfer, increase the national product, create qualified jobs, and pay taxes and dues, thus contributing in different ways to the overall macroeconomic growth of the host countries. The impact of the multinational companies on the rate and structure of employ-ment in a particular country is usually given by the type of output which the multinational company produces and by the methods used to produce it. To the extent to which the activity of the multinational companies can support the increase of the competitive advantage both of the investing countries and of the host countries, it can support the global process of industrialization and reorganisation. When the multinational company plays a beneficial social role, it can, however, provide only partial remedies and cannot offer solutions for the major social problems regarding the environment, working standards or human rights. The contributions of the multinational companies to the sustainable development are considerable, by the transfer of technology and good managerial practices.
