Rezumat | ||||||
Subsidiarity is the principle which states that matters ought to be handled by the smallest
(or, the lowest) complent authority. It is the idea that a central authority should have a
subsidiarity function, performing only those tasks which cannot be performed effectively at a
more immediate or local level. Subsidiarity is one of fundamental principles of EU law,
according to which the EU may only set (i.e. make laws) where member states agree that action
of individual countries is insufficient. The principles was established in the 1992 Treaty of
Maastricht.
