At the beginning of the ’90 the socialist countries and that of the former Soviet Union
initiated the transition from totalitarian to democratic regime. The process differed according to
internal and external factors, reason why post totalitarian periods lasted differently, some of
which outstripping EU states member at the GDP and democratic institutions chapters, others
being still in transition.
