This article examines transition studies with a special focus on the RM. It is centered on
fair critical evaluations of pots-communist countries by foreign experts, who pay special
attention to such their common characteristics as inability to prevent poverty and inequality
provoking feelings of disillusionment among citizens and thus threatening democratic stability.
Since Moldova presents extreme case of the poorest country in Europe the paper places special
emphasis on the importance of the social conditions of democracy and vital necessity of theirs
building in the land, recalling that a strong economy generates a more democratic political
culture, lower inequality, a larger middle class, a less domineering state, and a more vigorous
and pluralistic civil society, the lack of which, in the analysts’ view, still is obvious in the RM.
