In this study we are critically analyzed the information from a recently published historical document, which contains data about the relations between the Moldova and the Crimean Hanat during the reign of Ştefănită (Stephen the IV-th) (1517-1527). According to the document (dating back to 1526), until 1521, Mehmed I Giray had suffered a defeat in Moldova and was made prisoner, and after his release a son of the inn became a hostage in Moldova. We try to argue that this information is erroneous. It might actually be a late echo of the events of the summer of 1518, when a Tartar host led by Alp Giray was defeated. As a result, high representatives of the Tatar aristocracy, members of the Mangyt clan and maybe Barîn, were captured. For their release, the voivod of Moldova, Ştefănită, asked for a son of the inn as a hostage. Thus, the real events of 1518 took a distorted form in the circles from which the Habsburg agent collected this information in 1526 and included in his report. |
