The paper Historical and heraldic aspects in the works of Dimitrie Cantemir (1673-1723), analyzes the princes interest both regarding the historical beginnings of Moldova, and the origins of this country's state symbols. If in his early works he believed the legend about Dragoş the Founder of the Country (1347-1354), with whom the state symbol with the wild bull head in the center was said to originate, then, in his later researches, he proposes a different opinion, that the coat of arms of the country has an ancient origin, from Roman Emperor Trajan (98-117), who founded in Dacia a fortress called "Caput Bovis" or Emperor Constantine the Great (306-337) whose currency a bulls head was represented. Finally, the authors propose critical assessments of D. Cantemir's views in terms of national historical-heraldic research from the last decades. |
