The European aspirations of the young Moldovan state were related with the
establishing of new political and economical partnerships, among which was the
Council of Europe. The Council of Europe membership guide Moldovan society
towards the democratisation and emergency of the state of low. A lot of efforts from
the political leadership and national diplomatic service were needed in order to gain
for the Republic of Moldova a special quest status in the European Parliament in
1993 and a full membership in the Council of Europe in 1995. The article gives a
review of the political and diplomatic measures in order the Republic of Moldova to
become member of the Council of Europe starting with first contacts to the present
days and the agenda of this process.
Author considers that Republic of Moldova - Council of Europe partnership play
an important role in the transition of Moldova from the totalitarian regime to the
open society, protection of human rights and fundamental freedoms.
