Gordon Goodwin’s Big Phat Band este una dintre cele mai cunoscute orchestre de jazz din sec. XXI, care combină stilul big bandurilor din epoca de swing cu cele contemporane, cum ar fi funk şi jazz fusion. Partiturile formaţiei Big Phat Band demonstrează o utilizare ingenioasă a posibilităţilor instrumentelor şi grupurilor orchestrale, reprezentând o piatră de încercare pentru orice orchestră de jazz, dar şi un manual adevărat pentru oricare aranjor şi conducător al big bandului. Scopul articolului de faţă este de a caracteriza unele particularităţi ale stilului formaţiei Gordon Goodwin’s Big Phat Band pe baza examinării a trei partituri de orientare stilistică diferită din repertoriul orchestrei.

Gordon Goodwin’s Big Phat Band is one of the most famous jazz orchestras of the 21st century that combines the style of big bands from the swing era with the contemporary ones such as funk and jazz fusion. The scores of the Big Phat Band demonstrate an ingenious use of the possibilities of orchestral instruments and groups, representing a touchstone for any jazz orchestra, but also a true manual for any arranger and conductor of the big band. The purpose of this article is to characterize some peculiarities of the style of Gordon Goodwin’s Big Phat Band based on the examination of three scores of diff erent stylistic orientation from the orchestra’s repertoire.
