Background. Medical terminology is a field of additional specialized knowledge. Medical terms are autonomous terminological units that bring additional knowledge about medical "things" and provide specialized communication in medicine. Objective of the study. The purpose of this study is to elucidate the process of formation, establishment and functioning of Romanian medical terminology, from an etymological perspective, in the context of the internationalization of medical terminology. Material and Methods. It was written with factual material selected from the specialized literature. The heterogeneity of the factual material involved the method of functional analysis and the method of distributional analysis (analysis of Greco-Latin doublets), the method of observation, the method of contextual analysis etc. Results. For the most part, the medical terms are of Greco-Latin origin, less of Arabic origin: nucha “nape”, basilic vein (˂ ar. bazilik “inner”), cephalic vein (ar. alkifal “outer”). The etymologization of medical terms identified metaphorization as the driving force in the formation of the medical terminological system that imposes its own denominative system, focused on conceptual metaphorical models. A distinct classification of medical metaphor has been suggested, focusing on the metaphor of "essence" and substance, the metaphor of "limited space," the metaphor of "unlimited space." 112 metaphorical terms were analyzed, used in medical terminology, from an etymological perspective. Conclusion. Medical terminology consists of terminological units that, at the level of knowledge, are specialized cognitive units, designating the medical "things". Etymologization facilitates the understanding and proper use of medical terms. |
