Background. Diabetes are a severe health issue, and an economic one for the health care system. Statistics show a continuous rise of diabetic individuals, which is believed to represent 642 millions in 2040. Medical treatment remains ineffective, placing bariatric surgery as an alternative method of treatment. Objective of the study. Analysis of Roux-en-Y gastric bypass efficiency in the treatment of type 2 diabetes for mildly obese and non obese patients. Material and Methods. The study includes 18 mildly obese and non obese patients diagnosed with type 2 diabetes who supported Roux-en-Y gastric bypass from 2010 to 2020. Duration of diabetes was of 7,4±4,5 years, preoperative BMI consisted of 32,2±2,08 (28,7-34,9) kg/m2. Blood glucose and glycosylated hemoglobin were 11,6 ± 3,86 mmol/l and 8,2 ± 1,4 % respectively. Results. Postoperative follow-up data after 12 months is reported, BMI consisting of 24,85±1,9 kg/m2 . Blood glucose and glycosylated hemoglobin were 6,18 ± 1,4 mmol/l and 5,9 ± 0,7 % respectively. The histochemical examination emphasized the presence of a chronic inflammatory infiltrate mostly formed of CD4 and CD8 T lymphocites. Conclusion. Preliminary data showed a high efficiency of Roux-en-Y gastric bypass in the treatment of type 2 diabetes for mildly obese and non obese patients, being a superior alternative for the current methods of treatment. |
