Background. The reflexes are the fundamental functional units of the nervous system, they can be altered by cognitive and affective variables. Changes in the amplitude of reflexes are a peripheral manifestation of supraspinal processes that influence the excitability of the spinal cord. Objective of the study. Evaluation of the degree of expression of patellar reflexes and their correlation with functional comorbidities in migraine patients. Material and Methods. A retrospective study included 98 patients with migraine who were examined in an objective neurological examination with emphasis on patellar reflexes. To identify emotional, vegetative disorders, accentuation or presence of personality disorders, patients completed a series of questionnaires. Results. The correlation coefficient was calculated between the degree of pronunciation of the patellar reflexes and the parameters of the questionnaires completed by the patients. Patients with migraine who have increased amplitude of patellar reflexes have a high probability of having affective disorders (anxiety: Rxy=+0,25; depression: Rxy=+0,24) and vegetative (respiratory dysfunction syndrome: Rxy=+0,20). Absent patellar reflexes can be a marker for identifying patients with accentuated personality traits (irresponsibility as personality trait facet: Rxy=-0,22; accentuation of hysterical personality trait: Rxy=-0,37 and borderline: Rxy=-0,28) induced by a precarious family atmosphere. Conclusion. This study demonstrated the clinical importance of patellar reflexes. The ease of their evaluation and the short time allow their use as a diagnostic screening for functional comorbidities in patients with migraine.Braked patellar reflexes can be the marker of a psychopathological family pattern. |
