It is historically established way that Gagauz inhabit the south of Bessarabia (now - the Gagauz autonomy (Gagauz-Yeri) in the Republic of Moldova and the region of Odessa region in Ukraine), in the regionof Zaporozhye in Ukraine, in Bulgaria, Greece, Romania and the Russian Federation (in the North Caucasus - in North Osetia, the republic of Kabardino-Balkaria), in the areas of northern Kazakhstan. Gagauz population of Bessarabia has almost lost its cultural contacts with Bulgaria and Greece since the end of XVIII - early XIX century and - its cultural contacts with the North Caucasus and Kazakhstan from the end of XIX - early XX century. This situation has led to the fact that cultural contacts were interrupted, in the fi rst case for more than two hundred years, in the second case - for 100 years. As a result of this suspension that culturally Gagauz population inhabitting different countries has began to develop itself under conditions different from each other, despite the fact that, basically, all the Gagauz had retained their Gagauz consciousness. Linguistically, each country had developed its own characteristics: the Gagauz of Bessarabia had the Gagauz-Russian bilingualism; Gagauz from Zaporozhye - Gagauz-Ukrainian-Russian trilingualism; Gagauz in Greece - Gagauz-Greek bilingualism; Gagauz from Bulgaria - Bulgarian-Gagauz bilingualism; Gagauz from Romania - Gagauz-Romanian bilingualism. These features of regional differences regarding general Gagauz identity have not yet been studied. After the establishing of the Gagauz Autonomy in Moldova, beginning in 2006, Gagauz started conducting International Congresses of Gagauz. After centuries of lack of contact Gagauz from various countries began to gather at the World Congress, which allow them to restore lost connections |
