The work of the plastic artist Ilia Bogdesco (1923–2010) inscribes a special page in the national graphics of the contemporary period, his book illustration being undoubtedly revealed at the level of universal artistic values. Special artistic values are shown by the graphic artist’s elaborations in the illustration of the works of classical writers from universal and national literature M. de Cervantes, J. Swift, E. de Rotterdam, F. Cuper, C. Negruzzi, V. Alecsandri, I. Creangă, N. Gogol, F. Dostoevsky, A. Pushkin, L. Leonov et al. A distinctive aspect of Il. Bogdesco’s activity of book illustration is the fact that the graphic designer manages to distribute masterfully, taking into account the entire imagery of the literary work, semantic, decorative, calligraphic and illustrative accents, so that, taken as a whole, they reveal as widely as possible the character and the ideastical content of the literary work. The artist’s work attests to his professionalism and originality both in the compositional-artistic organization of the image, in the creation of portrait patterns of the characters, and in the possession of graphic figurative techniques. In general, the creation of Il. Bogdesco resides in the master’s high artistic culture, based, for the most part, on the traditions of universal classical art, including the Western European and Russian schools.
