The first written attestation about medieval housing from this area dates back to 1432-1433, when a document signed by Ilie Voievod mentioned a place called Selistea lui Heghetis. According to some researchers, Selistea lui Heghetis was situated somewhere on the current territory of the village of Răciula. Later, a document dated July 25th 1599 mentioned the Recila glade situated on the estate of the village of Nişcani, which today is neighbouring Răciula. Two centuries later, in a document dated June 15th 1798, probably the same Recila glade is mentioned under the name of Răciula glade. It belonged to people from Nişcani, who donated it to monks who established there a hermitage. The hermitage took over the name of the glade and became Răciula hermitage and later Răciula monastery. During the construction of a stone fence at Răciula monastery in 2013, a large old dump for domestic waste was discovered there containing over 500 pieces of pottery. All of them represent pots made with the help of a rapidly rotating pottery wheel. Depending on the raw material, design and use, were established two types of pots: reddish or blackgrey pots made from sandy clay for daily use (most of them) and more delicate, reddish, sometimes enamelled pots. This type of pottery is characteristic of the late medieval and early modern period (18th-19th centuries). The items discovered at Răciula monastery date back to the 19th century, most probably its second half. |
