Archaeological site from Sagaidacul Nou village (Porumbrei com., Cimişilia District) belonging to the IV century AD was discovered in spring of 2013, when exploring the Sagaidacul Nou-Codreni road route. In spring of that year, there were conducted archaeological rescue and surveillance investigations, focusing on road construction line. Two sections were draw in the south of the site, in the section II being identifi ed three pottery kilns with two levels and two holes of different sizes used for fuel supply of pottery burning facilities. The quasi-tronconic-shaped kilns, with a maximum diameter of about 1,35 m, were dug into the ground, being composed of two overlapping rooms (vessels burning chamber and fi re chamber), separated by a grill made of clay on a skeleton of sticks and provided with 25-40 hot air circulation holes. An oven (no. 2) had a potter’s chamber located in the east and the other two installations represented a common access pit. It turned out that the kiln 1 partially overlapped the installation 2, which indicates that the complexes are not synchronous, the fi rst furnace operating in an earlier phase of existence of the settlement. A special interest presents the fact that the perforated grill and the median wall of the furnace 3, after they had been working a certain period, were completely dismantled in antiquity, not only kept their tracks. Discovered archaeological inventory consists of a token and a fragment of glass vessel, an iron piercer(?), three sharpening stones of hone, two clay spindle whorls, several pottery fragments and animal bones. In addition, there was a piece of magnifying glass to reduce iron ore. The pottery material includes several categories and types of vessels characteristic of the Sântana de Mureş-Cerneahov culture. Wheel made pottery of fi ne and lumpy gray paste is predominant, dishes modeled by hand and Roman imported ones constituting an insignifi cant percentage. The archaeological site at Sagaidacul Nou is of real research potential interest and will offer other important information about the material culture, lifestyle and occupations of the inhabitants from contact zone between forest steppe and steppe of the investigated space in the IV century AD. |
