Rezumat

In this study, data from Holstein (19) and Brown Swiss (17) grown under feedlot conditions were used to evaluate and compare performance differences in the Mediterranean type of climate, covering winter, spring, summer and autumn seasons. Initial average weights of cattle were 158 and 131 kg for Holstein and Brown Swiss, respectively. The differences in final weights were not significant (P˃0.05). Holstein and Brown Swiss animal’s average final weights of 502 and 493 kg, respectively. Mean total weight gain, Daily liveweight gain for Brown-Swiss and Holstein cattle were 90.4, 86.0 kg and 1.035, 0.979 kg respectively. There were no statistically (P >0.05) significant differences between seasons for Total Daily Liveweight gain winter, spring and autumn (0.965, 0.994 and 0.943 kg/day respectively); however, summer performance (1.124 kg/day) was significantly greater (P <0.05) than other seasons. There were no significant (P> 0.05) differences between both breeds in all seasons. The results showed that under the Mediterranean conditions, both cattle breeds can be recommended to feedlot beef systems in the region.
