The paper is focused on visual interpretations of the national traditions that entered the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, found in the postage stamps, produced by “Poşta Moldovei” [Moldavian Post], the state company, in 1992–2016. There are considered small-size graphic representations, either photographs or color drawings, of three cultural phenomenа: 1) Men’s group Colindat. Christmas-time ritual; 2) Traditional wall-carpet craftsmanship; 3) Mărţişor, cultural practice associated to the 1st of March. The author introduces to an international audience both the body of the internationally recognized Moldavian cultural appearances and the peculiarities of their depiction in the stamps of outstanding aesthetical value. Also, there are examined several specific methods and theoretical issues such as image dimensioning, in-full and in-body representation, using blank space around image on the board. Respectively, the secondary literature on these traditions and customs and on the art of postage stamp is provided. There is also provided brief data on the production of postage stamps in the Republic of Moldova in the past, on the characters featuring the present-time Moldavian postage stamps, on the remarkable Moldavian artists, authors of stamps, on the Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage. |
