Rezumat

The paper is dedicated to the legend of the wheatear (sometimes it refers to rye or corn), found among the Romanians and many other European nations (it has parallels in Asia as well). The main motif of the legend is that the wheatears once covered the whole straw, from the ground until its top. After people had sinned, long ago, only one wheatear remained on the top. The author of the article proposes a systematization of the Romanian variants of the legend. The Romanian versions illustrate two subject lines: (1) Adam and Eve had sinned, this is why only one wheatear was left; (2) the wheatear or bread had once been defi led. In the Romanian legends, one encounters several elements characteristic also for other nations’ folklore, but they are presented in a diff erent context. It is worth analysing the signifi cances of each variant in the context of the Romanian traditional culture. Using the language of myth, the legend illustrates traditional regards on agricultural labours and their fi nal product – bread.
