The PCB (polychlorinated biphenyls) content in transformer oil more 50,0 mg/kg was
detected by the inventory of energetic equipment on transformer station in some cases. The
contaminated equipment was removed for the utilization. However the PCB pollution level in soil
from that stations was not determined. The aim of this investigation was a determination of PCBs
contamination level in soil from territories where equipment with high level of these substances in
transformer oil was kept. The chemical analysis of PCBs was made by gas-chromatography on the
equipment of Agilent Technologies (GC6890 equipped μ-ECD detector) by international normative
documents.
The PCBs pollution level was determined in large interval 9,4 – 1419,5 mg/kg. The pollution
spectrum is presented generally by “tri-“ and “tetrachlorobiphenils”. These compounds are
presented 90 % of total PCBs contamination. “Penta-„ and „hexachlorobiphenyls” have 1 – 10 %.
The pollution spectrum corresponds to PCBs mixture Aroclor1242. Soils with relative low PCBs
content have a PCBs mixture Aroclor1254. This data correspond with previously obtained
information about PCBs content in sediments of Nistru River. The pollution spectrum is similar for
transformer station and sediments from Nistru River too. Thereby the fact of PCBs migration for the
long distance from pollution sources was established. The obtained results showed a PCBs extreme
contamination level in soil on investigated transformer stations. These sites produce a high risk level
for the environment and public health. The monitoring program is required as near these sites as for
all territory of Moldova Republic. The preventive and remediation actions should to be made on sites
with extra high PCBs pollution level for the migration elimination and soil cleaning.
