New and emerging methods in the field of regenerative medicine are utilizing tissue engineering technologies to replace deficient or missing musculoskeletal components. Present techniques are based on restoring specific tissues by using scaffolds, specific tissue cells and bioactive molecules. There is growing interest in replacing adult tissue-specific cells with adult multipotent stem cells. Adult multipotent stem cells recently have been proven to possess the capability to differentiate into different mesoderm lineages, like bone, cartilage, tendon, adipose tissue or medullar stroma. Thorough understanding of factors regulating stem cells differentiation will further lead to better mastering of in vitro reproduction of different musculoskeletal components. The paper describes adult stem cells properties, methods of harvesting, present clinical application and future trends, with special attention given to bone, cartilage and tendon. |
