Rezumat

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are persistent in the environment and have bioaccumulation and toxic effect to humans and environment. The source of PAHs pollution are incomplete combustion of organic materials derived primarily from burning of fossil fuels (coal/coke, oil, gas), waste and biomass, transportation (vehicular traffic, railway) exhausts, petrol industry, domestic heating, and other industrial emissions. The wetland of Low Prut valley has one petrol deposit which is situated at Lake Beleu near Slobozia Mare village in Republic of Moldova. The aim of this study was a study of PAHs concentration in water and sediment samples for the assessment of potential PAHs pollution source in this area. 17 PAHs congeners were analysed by GC/MS technique according to international methods. Water and sediment samples were collected from several points at Beleu Lake and near boreholes, which are in the operation. The total PAHs concentration in water samples is changed in the interval from 0.045 to 0.185 mg/L. Benz[a]pyrene concentration reached a value to 0.050 mg/L. The total PAHs concentration in sediment samples is in the interval from 28.5 to 1545.0 mg/kg. Therefore, total PAHs concentration is on the level from unpolluted to slight polluted sites. The PAHs spectrum is characterized by 3 – 6 ring PAHs. Analysis of PAHs ring rations showed that a principal pollution is a crude oil and combustion in studied area. The comparison of total PAHs concentration and there rations in samples from different sites of Beleu Lake demonstrated a similar pollution sources of PAHs. Some samples from sites on the relative bid distance from petrol deposit have high total PAHs concentration. The conclusion is that patrol deposit has a slow impact to the PAHs concentration in Beleu Lake ecosystem but there are and other pollution sources from Slobozia Mare village (combustion of domestic waste) and transport in wetland zone. The analysis of local situation with PAHs concentration in water and sediment samples at Beleu Lake showed a relative small and slightly pollution level by these substances in the comparison with other territories from Low Danube area, especially from industry regions.
