The neutral homometallic wheel, Cr8F8(O2CCMe3)16 (1) [1] has been widely studied, both because of its magnetic properties, [see for e.g. 2, 3], and because it can act as a host for small organic molecules [4]. The ring-shaped molecule 1 (in short Cr8) contains an even number, N, of interacting ions, the spin cancellation is complete and the ground state is S = 0. Such molecules can serve as model systems for study of 1-D magnetic materials, as well as quantum effects, and magnetic anisotropy. Materials like Cr8 are called molecular magnets, because they are characterized by a strongly interacting magnetic core of transition metal ions surrounded by an organic shell which prevents the magnetic interaction between molecules. The molecule itself acts as a separate magnet. A new Cr8 wheel [Cr8F8(O2CCBrMe2)16] (2) was obtained from reaction of 1 with 2-bromo-2-methylpropionic acid. The crystal structure of 2 crystallized from acetone is shown in figure. Each chromium ion in molecule 2 is coordinated by two fluoride ions and four carboxylate ligand groups. The coordination environment of the chromium ions is slightly distorted octahedral. The eight Cr(III) ions form an almost perfectly planar octagon. Inside the molecule, perpendicular to the mean plane of the Cr8 cycle, is an elongated dumbbell-shaped void of 6 Å diameter in the middle (inside the Cr8F8) and 9 Å at the ends (surrounded by the axial carboxyl ate ligands). Similarly to 1, complex 2 incorporates the small organic molecule into this cavity. The magnetic properties will be discussed.figureStructure of the complex [Cr8F8(O2CCBrMe2)16 (Me2CO)2] |
