Lanthanoide(III)-bismuth(III) heterometallic complexes are of great interest
in view of their potential use as single-source precursors for advanced materials.

These materials can be used as superconductors, ionic conductors, catalysts,
ferroelectrics, pigments etc.
The heterometallic complex of formulae NdBiEdta(NCS)2 ⋅ 4H2O (1) has
been obtained by an exchange reaction of neodymium(III) thiocyanate with
ammonium ethylenediaminetatraacetatebismuth(III) in aqueous solutions.
Nd(NCS)3 solution has been obtained by dissolving neodymium(III) carbonates
in aqueous HNCS.
The obtained complex has been investigated by thermogravimetry analysis,
IR, RMN spectroscopies and single crystal X-ray crystallography. Crystal 1 is

monoclinic and crystallizes in P21/n space group with unit cell parameters: a
= 9.393(2), b =16.808(3), c = 14.606(3) (Å), β=103.07(3)º. Crystal structure
represents a 3D coordination network sustained by the bridging function of four
carboxylate groups of the decadentate Edta4- ligand and one of two NCS- ligands,
coordinated to Bi through S atom (Bi(1)-S(1) 3.175(3) Å) and to Nd through
N atom (Bi(1)-N(3) 2.488(3) Å). The second NCS- group is coordinated as
monodentate ligand Bi(1)-S(2) 3.147(3) Å). Analogue tridimensional structures
have been obtained with nitrate ion. [1]
