In the course of our studies on the problem of stress, adaptation and health (Furdui T. I. et al., 1986, 1990, 1991, 1994, etc.) and the elaboration of the bases for the progress of psychosanocreatology (Furdui T. I. et al., 1990, 2000-2017, etc.), the question about the role and place of stress and emotions in the system of scientific and practical foundations, methods and ways of directed formation of mental health has arisen. The necessity of its solution was due to the common belief that stress and emotions emerged in the course of evolution as biologically useful reactions ensuring the self-preservation of the organism under the short-term action of threatening factors of various nature by mobilizing its physical and mental potencies, through attacking or avoiding factors dangerous for its life, which, if it is impossible to eliminate them, or to achieve the desired, become the pathogenetic basis for the development of various dissanogenies or, as has been shown in animal experiments (Furdui T. I. et al., …….), cause premature general biological degradation of the organism (a sharp decrease in the vital potential, body weight, a diminution of the function of the adrenal cortex, the reproductive system, etc.), the data most of which have been confirmed in human studies. Moreover, according to the International Classification of Diseases ICD-10, three out of 10 diagnostic columns describing the diagnostic criteria of all nosological mental disorders, to some extent, reflect the signs of psychogenic stress. In addition, according to forecasts, with the development of society, the number of psychogenic stress factors will increase, and the life of the future generation will proceed not just in emotional but in very aggressive stressful situations, to which people will not be able to spontaneously psycho-functionally adapt; therefore, psychosanocreatology, the main task of which is the directed formation and maintenance of the psyche and mental health in accordance with the conditions of life, becomes particularly relevant. The concept of directed formation and maintenance of mental health under the action of stress factors on the organism pertains to: 1) ascertaining the nature and type of stress – somato-visceral or psychogenic; 2) determining the features of emotions and psychogenic stress manifestation – sanogenic or dissanogenic; 3) elimination of the stress factors, if it is possible, with subsequent, depending on the type of stress, planning specific measures for diminishing dissanogenic emotions and the corresponding type of stress and for purposeful creation or maintenance of mental health. Identification of the role of emotions and the type of stress in the development of psychosanogenies and psychodissanogenies through analysis of their physiological and psychic effects in the process of human activity, in terms of the man’s historical development, showed that the existing idea of the identity of the biological function of emotions and stress, in assessing the significance and consequences of the factor affecting the organism for the person and others, in foreseeing their own actions and mobilizing the organism to achieve the desired, equalizes the biological purpose of these two mental reactions. A special study of factors that cause stress and emotions, the mechanisms of their development and the symptomatology of their manifestation has shown that if the stimulus is perceived as a threat, challenge or something extremely unpleasant, then follows: 1) the activation of emotional mechanisms which are, in turn, a stimulus of protective reactions (attack or avoidance); 2) the development of psychogenic stress, in the case of realization of the lack of achievement of the desired; depending on the intensity and duration of the stress factor, this state will become the basis for adaptation (sanogeny) or disadaptation (dissanogeny); 3) directed influence on the formation and maintenance of mental health through the diminution of the psychogenic stress and by means of the vector impact on emotions, cognitive and behavioral activities.
