Study of zoosocial relations is a one of the central issues in physiology of higher nervous activity of social animals. One of the characteristic features of the animal groups is hierarchical structure which is formed as the result of antagonistic interactions and provides different access to the resources. Hierarchical status and individual social experience may affect cognitive abilities and effectiveness of social interaction between animals. In this regard, the aim of the study was to analyze the features of individual learning in complex interactive environment and the influence of social experience and hierarchical status in the group on the development of cooperative behavior in laboratory rats. Male Wistar rats were used in this study. Six rats were housed individually and other were divided into two groups (5 rats/group). Throughout the experiment we intermittently examined hierarchical organization of the groups by determining social rank of each rat according to the histograms of the distribution of the number and duration of drinking acts and sociometric matrices based on the «victory»/«defeat» ratios established in competition for access to a drinking bowl after 24-hour water deprivation. After that, during 20 sessions, rats learnt to earn food or drink reward by touching one of the two stimulus lights displayed on the sensory panels of the «Touch Screen Chamber» after 24-hour food and water deprivation. After the ninth session, previously isolated rats were grouped together and learning sessions were continued with additional intermittent testing of the newly formed hierarchical organization. After that, rats were paired, and sessions of learning cooperation started. To develop cooperative behavior, animals had to learn to coordinate their actions and to touch the stimulus light on the screen together within the 5-second interval in order to earn food rewards. The results of the study have demonstrated that two types of the hierarchical structure – «monodominance» and «polydominance» were formed in the groups. During the sessions of individual learning rats from the group with monodominant structure and individually housed rats exhibited lower learning effectiveness than rats from the group with polydominant hierarchical structure. After «socialization», the effectiveness of learning increased in 67 per cent of the previously isolated rats. During the sessions of cooperation, six of eight pairs of rats achieved effective cooperation: 100 per cent of the pairs from the group with polydominant hierarchical structure and 67 per cent of the «socialized» rats, whereas rats from the group with monodominant structure did not achieve cooperation. Among the experimental pairs, leading and following individuals were identified. Moreover, a rat with higher social rank had significantly higher probability to become a leader. Therefore, it has been shown that social experience and hierarchical structure of the group play an important role in individual learning and interaction between animals towards achieving collective results.
