Study motivation: the expansion of computers in most jobs. Aim: To correlate occupational risk factors with morbidity of ocular diseases detected to an occupational group engaged in a prolonged activity to the computer. Material and methods. The study group consisted of 210 employees of a computer company having various occupational characteristics (age, sex, length of exposure, profession); the complex and combined methodology consisted of corroboration the information derived from the ergonomic study of workplace, responses to check-list questionnaires and results of employment and periodic medical examinations. Results and discussion. A total of 112 (53,3%) employees reported eye symptoms, confi rmed by ophthalmologist, and assigned to the most common pathological entities: myopia, astigmatism (myopic) and hyperopia. Illnesses were progressively enhanced due to non-ergonomic work program of employees (overtime for non-occupational activities, prescription non-compliance). Conclusions. There was a higher incidence of discomfort and ocular pathology in informatics employees. The study is intended as a warning to occupational medicine and family physicians in these units because the implementation of a surveillance and prevention program is crucial, according to EU Directive 90/270 for employees in this sector. |
