In 2017, a dagger found in the south of the Republic of Moldova between the Haragîș and Capaclia villages of the Cantemir district was at the disposal of the National Archaeological Agency. The pommel of the dagger was decorated in the Scythian animal style (i.e. the ends of the pommel were formed like the heads of birds of prey). According to a number of other signs the atifact belongs to the Găiceana type of Scythian akinakai, which since the middle of the 6th century BC extends to the territory of European Scythia. Apparently, the appearance of ornithomorphic and zoomorphic pommels fits into the framework of the common Eurasian tradition like the griffin daggers which spread simultaneously in the Volga-Urals, Zhetysu, Sayan-Altai and Northern China regions. A realistic ornithomorphic pommel of the Găiceana type appears on a wide series of swords and daggers with semicircular or „segment-like” hilts. Starting from the 5th century BC the simplification of the ornithomorphic pommel begins and that was the first step of a departure from realism. Already at the late 5th century BC the ornithomorphic design becames finally schematized, turning into an ornamental design. Over time, a typological series of antenna pommels in the form of the heads of birds of prey, starting with large realistic forms, gradually evolves towards minimization and schematism, possibly associated with the loss of the initial idea of the image.
